Sustainability in the Plastic Industry

The Semadeni Plastics Group develops and manufactures plastic-appropriate solutions such as injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, and CNC machining. Founded in 1952 and headquartered in Bern, the plastic manufacturer operates with ecological foresight through the use of recycling and bioplastics.

Since 2021, the company has been participating in the Swiss Triple Impact (STI) program and has committed to five sustainability goals. With their promise to pursue these goals, they have been included in the STI directory and thus become part of the STI community.

100% Renewable Energy and Climate Neutrality in All Three Scopes

Semadeni has already achieved two of its objectives in 2022. They exclusively source renewable energy for the production of their products. Further reduction measures to save negative emissions are being implemented. The company aims to recycle and reuse a minimum of 250 tons (20% of their plastic material consumption) by 2030. Additionally, all emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3) are currently offset through certified climate protection projects, making a significant contribution to achieving SDG 13.

The SDGs help to develop an understanding of where the problems and solutions lie and where future needs arise. If you don't consider this, you will eventually be out of business. For me, sustainability is a question of the future; it is not a 'nice to have,' it is a 'need to have.' Patrick Semadeni, CEO, Semadeni Plastics Group

Single-Use Products vs. Reusable Products

Following SDG 12, the Semadeni Group is working to expand its range with reusable products to combat the consumption of disposable goods. This is planned to be implemented by 2025.

More Diversity by 2030

The organization is also engaged in the social aspect of the Sustainable Development Goals. The goal is complete gender parity in the distribution of genders. However, by then, at least 40% of both genders should be represented in management positions.

Implementing the SDGs in day-to-day business operations, defining measures and goals, is a complex endeavor. We started in 2018 and then learned about STI in 2020. That was exactly what helped us implement a methodology, gain an overview, and use the SDG Action Manager to get a systematic approach. Patrick Semadeni, CEO, Semadeni Plastics Group
